Experimental Study of Regulation of the Cell Volume

Abstract
In recent investigation, the role of the potassium on the various cells has been studied. And the effects of calcium ion in the intracellular fluid are very important on the metabolic role of the cell. This study was carried out to define the effect of high potassium and calcium free solution on liver and renal tissues.
The changes of the cell volume was determined by measuring the wet weight and dry weight of tissue slices.
The oxygen consumption rate of slices of liver and renal tissues in albino rat was determined using the Warburg¢¥s manometric technique.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. The cell volume in Kreb¢¥s-Ringer medium with 30mM NaCI replaced by 30MM KCI, was increased in renal cortex whereas unchanged in liver tissues.
2. The cell volume was increased in liver and renal cortex in calcium free medium.
3. The oxygen consumption rate-was increased in liver and renal cortex in medium with 30mM NaCI replaced with 30mM KCI.
4. The oxygen consumption rate was increased in liver and renal cortex in calcium free high potassium.
